Banbury cross is the ornate monument (built in 1859) in the centre of the photo, also in the centre of a roundabout. It must have been a disappointment for anyone looking for the nursery rhyme "fine lady upon a white horse", until last year when they finally found one.














Ride a cock horse to Banbury cross,
To see a fine lady upon a white horse,
With rings on her fingers and bells on her toes,
She shall have music wherever she goes.
