harmless huntsman

Do spiders hibernate for the winter? I found this huntsman spider under the lid of our Aussie Rotter (compost bin) and he seems to have lost one leg - hope it wasn't the taking off of the lid that took off the leg. There must be other spiders around but they weren't very easy to find, on foggy mornings I see webs sparkling with drops of moisture in among the roses and the ringlock fencing. The makers of the webs must be somewhere.
